Abstract
Heavy Metal Contamination Of Water Is One Of The Most Pressing Environmental And Public Health Crises Of The Industrial Era, Particularly In Rapidly Developing Nations Where Regulatory Frameworks Lag Behind Industrial Expansion. This Review Synthesizes Global Literature On Heavy Metal Pollution In Water, Focusing On Industrial Sources And Their Consequences For Aquatic Ecosystems And Human Health. It Examines Major Metals Of Concern—iron, Copper, Zinc, Manganese, Nickel, Chromium, And Cobalt—in Surface Water, Groundwater, And Industrial Effluents. Findings Reveal That Concentrations Frequently Exceed Permissible Limits Set By BIS, WHO, USEPA, And The European Union Across India, Bangladesh, China, Nigeria, And Other Industrializing Regions. The Review Highlights The Non-biodegradable And Bioaccumulative Nature Of Heavy Metals And Their Carcinogenic, Neurotoxic, Nephrotoxic, And Developmental Health Effects. Seasonal Variations Significantly Influence Metal Concentrations, With Higher Levels During Dry Seasons And Lower Levels During Monsoons. Conventional Treatment Technologies Remain Inadequate, While Emerging Approaches Such As Nanomaterial-based Adsorption, Membrane Filtration, And Bioremediation Show Promise. Ultimately, This Review Calls For Strengthened Regulatory Enforcement, Continuous Monitoring, Source Apportionment, And Green Chemistry Principles To Safeguard Water Resources For Present And Future Generations.
